| Boat Name: Oceanic Explorer, Dive Victoria Boat Captain: Michael Headed down to The Scuba Doctor in Rye and rigged up my twin cylinder setup. Then down to Portsea, checked in with Dive Victoria, kitted up and headed onto the boat. Five intrepid divers. The boat headed over to Queenscliff to pick up another diver. We then headed for Lonsdale Wall only to find the Queen of the Netherlands dredge parked over where we wanted to dive. It had moved from the channel entrace to permit shipping to pass through. So this ruled out any wall dives. It was decided to head out and do somethinh off Portsea Back Beach instead. It was a cold day and everyone was making the most of this being my first dive back in Melbourne since Vanuatu. It got even worse when I realised I'd forgotten my hood! Eventually it was time to climb into our kit, do our checks and hit the water. Well it was COLD! Heather and I made our way to the bottom and started pottering about. Visibility was pretty ordinary, as was the dive location. Not a lot to see. I made a mental note that I really needed to organise to get the Northern Diver Undersuit from The Scuba Doctor so that I'd be warmer in my dry suit. Eventually Heather asked me about starting our ascent. I signalled Okay. We'd been allowed a 60 minute run time and my dive computer was saying that's what we'd get if we left the bottom now. But Heather stayed down and it was another five minutes or so before we actually started our ascent. While doing a deep stop at 15 metes Heather asked how much deco time I needed. I signalled 20 minutes. There was a look of shock on her face. She only had 8 minutes. Turns out Heather was diving on Nitrox with her computer in Nitrox mode, while I was diving on Air in Air mode. Heather deployed her SMB and we ascended up to 5 metres. On completing her deco, Heather surfaced, leaving me hanging on the end of her SMB. Then a seal joined me for a few minutes. These are certainly very inquisitive and amusing marine animals. As I hung there I could hear the dive boat coming in to check and then heading away. Eventually it was time to surface. As Michael manouvered the boat over to me her called out, "You must have iceicles hanging off you buy now!" But actually, at 5 metres it had been quite pleasant. We headed back to Portsea Pier and then back to The Scuba Doctor to wash my kit, debrief, and work out what undersuit to order. |
