| Instructor: Mark Ryan, Aquability Boat Name: Dive Victoria, Portsea Fifth dive of my TDI Advanced Nitrox Diver and TDI Decompression Procedures Diver courses with Mark Ryan as the instructor. Heather Pardoe and I were a buddy pair with me as dive leader. Brendan Stevenson and Mark Ryan were along to watch. We headed down the shot line and onto the wall. I kept tracking down to get our 45 metre max depth. Eventually I found myself on the sand at the bottom of the wall. It's interesting how people can get a different perspective of things during a dive. The visibility wasn't real good and Brendan was trailing us all. During the dive briefing he commented that he couldn't understand why I'd left the wall and headed out a good 50 metres into the blue. In fact, I may have left the wall, but only because I was following the bottom to get the depth. From where Brendan was he couldn't see the bottom and thus had a totally different take on what was going on. We made our way back up and along the wall keeping it on our right until we were at 30 metres. Mark suggested we turn around and make our way back. By my running time and dive plan we had another 4 minutes to go before needing to be at 21 metres, which would be roughly the top of the wall. But for some reason the others were hurrying me along. We came up to 21 metres and started to switch to the stage cylinders and I prepared to shoot my DSMB. But everyone was hurrying me on again. So we started doing our ascent. Again, thinking we had heaps of time, I shot my DSMB. But then the others hurried me along again. Eventually we got to our longer stop at 6 metres. Mark came over to me and checked my dive time. Then went and checked Heather's dive time. Then came back and showed me his dive time. For some reason I was running 4 minutes behind the others. Suddenly it became obvious why everyone was rushing me when I thought we had plenty of time. I'm still at a loss to understand how this happened. However, this incident highlighted just why it was important to have two dive timers and check with the others if there was any major discrepency. Eventually we surfaced on schedule, got back onboard the dive boat and headed back into Portsea. We all went into the cafe nearby for lunch and a dive debriefing. |
