| The USS Carlisle (APA-69) was a Gilliam-class attack transport vessel that served in the Pacific in World War II. Attack transport vessels are designed to transport invasion forces ashore. As such, they have their own landing crafts and the winches, cranes, etc. The key difference between an attack transport and a landing craft is that attack transports do not beach themselves to disembark troops. The attack transport ships also have a variety of armament to protect themselves. The Carlisle was sunk by the test blast "Able" as a target ship during the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll on 1 July 1946. The bomb detonated about 400 metres off her port side. The blast displaced the ship, toppled her stacks and mainmast, and damaged her superstructure. She sank about half an hour after the detonation, smoking heavily amidships. For our Saturday morning dive we headed over to the USS Carlisle attach transport. The USS Carlisle rests upright on the sandy bottom of Bikini Atoll in 52 metres (170 ft) of water. |
