Boat: "Miles Ahead", John Lawler's 6.5m 175HP, Sorrento

With John Lawler, Bridey Leggatt, Mick Kakafikas, John Merlo and myself on board we headed out from Sorrento Boat Ramp in near perfectly smooth conditions to meet up with Alan Beckhurst outside of the heads.

Time to decide on the first dive site. Alan and his divers were keen to dive either the Rotomahana or Courrier. Both of these are about 40 metre dives and some on our boat weren't keen to be going that deep. So we chose to head for the J4 Submarine instead.

On arrival at the J4 Submarine, we found another private boat there and asked if we could use their shot line. They replied that their depth sounder was on the blink and could we check the shot. We did and ended up putting a shot line down ourselves as their shot line wasn't anywhere near the sub. Mick, John and myself then geared up and went in.

We arrived at the bottom to find pretty good visibility and fish everywhere. We went through the break into the main section of the submarine.

Again, I'd never seen so many fish inside the J4 submarine on previous dives. No surge and there was good visibility so we went on through. We arrived at a bulkhead where on previous dives I had exited via the hole up onto the deck. This time the three of us proceeded into the rear compartment.

We came to the end of the compartment to find two exit points. John semed to go through the one on his side easily, but I was doubtful I was going to make it through. Sure enough I couldn't, so Michael and I retraced our journey back to the beggining of the rear section, exited and then went to the stern to join up with John again.

We then beaded towards the bow on the outside of the submarinechecking out the marine life on the way. As we got to the bow the divers from the other private boat arrived.

We started our ascent up the shot line.

On arrival at the surface we found two Dive Victoria boats had joined us, plus the Dive Rite boat and another private boat. It was crowded out here.

John and Bridey geared up and went in. John said that when he looked inside the sub it was all silted up with torches everywhere. It looks like Mick, John and myself had the best of it being first.

We joined up with Alan Beckhurst again to have lunch. Conditions were so calm we simply drifted outside of the heads while having lunch. Then we decided to head down to the Portsea back beach for our second dive.
