Divemaster: John Lawler, VSAG
Boat: Mick Jeacle's Haynes Hunter 540 SC Explorer, Sorrento

First dive with VSAG for 2007. Stopped by The Scuba Doctor on the way down and got a new pair of Northern Diver 2mm superstretch neoprene gloves.

I arrived at Sorrento to find John Lawler already there with his boat, plus Alan Storen and some of the others. I started to unload my gear from the car and get into my wet suit. Peter Briggs showed up with his boat, shortly followed by Mick Jeacle with his boat. I was assigned to Mick's boat and we started to load the gear.

Once all three boats were launched, we headed out to the J4 Submarine.

There was a lot of activity on the bay but no-one else out at the J4 Sub.

Mick Jeacle positioned us over the J4 and Alan put in the shot line. Then Alan, Cathy and myself geared up. (I must remember not to add the BC weights until after I get my BC on when using my 15 litre steel cylinder.)

We went in and followed the shot line onto the bow of the submarine.

We proceeded back to the break and went into the forward section to see the torpedo tubes. Then we entered the main body of the submarine and swam through to the rear bulkhead. There was a bit of surge happening, which made it fun. As we were passing the hole at the rear of the conning tower, Cathy was spat out the top by the surge. Being slightly ahead of her, I managed to make it across and join Alan at the bulkhead. Alan and I then exited via the hole.

The three of us proceeded back towards the bow down the port side. There was a large school of silvery coloured fish hanging around to the port of the conning tower. Some very large ones in amongst many smaller ones, possible juveniles. They totally ignored us, let us stop and look, and swim past without moving from their station.

We stopped to check out the plaque at the base of the conning tower.

I signalled to Alan that I was at 100 bar and shortly afterwards we started our ascent, stopping for a one minute safety stop at 10 metres, followed by a longer one at 5 metres.

There was something simply marvelous about this dive that is hard to explain. Simply delightful.

Once the three of us were back aboard, Mick Jeacle went in, buddy up with Mike Kakafikas from Peter's boat.

While we were waiting for them, a Dive Victoria boat arrived on the site and looked like it was going to shot the sub with our two divers in the water. So we headed over and Alan Storen let them know that we had two divers in that were due up in about 5 to 10 minutes. They moved away and waited until we had recovered our divers.

It was obvious conditions at the Rip were going to be a bit trickier than they were as we came out. So Peter Briggs transferred some of the cylinders on his boat to the larger boats before we headed back through the Rip. There was a lot of shipping activity and we ended up following one of the Pilot boats in through the Rip.

Once we were positioned off of Point Lonsdale we all stopped for lunch.
