| For our Wednesday afternoon dive, it was back to explore the USS Saratoga (CV-3) aircraft carrier. This time, we descended to the stern of the USS Saratoga's flight deck and then down to her propellers and rudder. We then made our way down the port side of the Saratoga and followed an anchor chain out to the wreck of a Grumman TBM-3E Avenger torpedo bomber, an aircraft built by General Motors. This plane sits upright on the Bikini Lagoon bottom, facing toward the Saratoga, approximately 30 to 45 metres (100-150 feet) from the port side aft quad Bofor mount. The engine is broken off in front of the aeroplane, and one of the props is sticking up out of the sand. We then made our way back to the stern of the USS Saratoga and explored the port side, checking out the various anti-aircraft gun emplacements, as we made our way to the bow. We made our controlled ascent to the deco bar, which was hanging below MV Windward. See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_TBF_Avenger |
