The USS Lamson (DD-367) was a U.S. Navy destroyer sunk by the "Able" atomic bomb on 1 July 1946 during the Operation Crossroads tests at Bikini Atoll. Despite being moored more than 550 metres (600 yards) from ground zero, the "Able" test blast severely damaged the ship, which capsized and sank just hours later.

The USS Lamson sits upright on the sandy bottom of Bikini Atoll in 52 metres (170 ft) of water, with the deck averaging about 48-49 metres deep. Her stern is near a depression in the reef, indicating she sank stern first.

The atomic blast heavily damaged the USS Lamson and tore off most of the upper superstructure: stacks, masts, and the bridge are all gone. There is not much topside to explore. However, you will still see the bridge telegraph and some instruments, as well as depth charge racks, torpedo tubes, and the marine-encrusted hull - most of the stuff that makes destroyers so much fun to dive on.

On Wednesday morning, we started the dive on the USS Lamson destroyer at the bow and made our way along the port side towards the stern.

Highlights of the dive included the bow, an anti-aircraft gun, a depth charge launcher, and torpedo launchers.
