Divemaster: John Lawler, VSAG
Boat: "Miles Ahead", John Lawler's 6.5m 175HP, Sorrento

Poor weather reports for Sunday 21-Jan-2007 resulted in the dive being changed to Saturday 20-Jan-2007 at the VSAG general meeting Thursday prior, This was a good decision as it turned out as Sunday was a real blow out!

Benita and I met up with John Lawler at Sorrento at 9:30 am and we began loading our gear and changing. Mick Jeacle arrived with his boat soon after. We were assigned to John Lawler's boat, along with Adrian Corfield and Michael Kakafikas.
The boats were duly launched with 9 divers and very beautiful calm conditions on the bay.

On arrival at Awesome Reef, John Lawler asked for a shipping report from the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse (VHF CH 12). The reported traffic meant all was good to go.

John, Benita and Adrian were the first in the water from our boat. The smiles on their faces when they were back on board was something to behold.

Michael and I duly went in and descended. What a magnificent dive site!

So much reef and interesting growth. So much marine life. It was simply awesome. Certainly the best site I've yet dived on.

I came across a large ships anchor at the top of a reef. Michael went to explore the canyon of that reef, came back up and found me, but missed noticing the anchor!

Meanwhile, back on the surface two vessels headed down the channel causing concern for the Dive Captain. Thankfully the vessels turned East negating the need to interupt our dive. Just goes to show, you can't always trust the shipping reports and need to stay vigilant at all times.

Once we were back on board, we set off to Popes Eye for lunch.
