| Boat: Spirit of Freedom, TUSA Cairns Dive Director: Mossy, TUSA Cairns Spirit of Freedom trip organised through The Scuba Doctor (Rye, Victoria) and Dive Adventures. On Sunday we flew into Cairns and stayed overnight at a local hotel outside of town. Teamed up with Leo Scicluna as my room and dive buddy for the trip. A group of us headed into town to grab some batteries and medical supplies, then back to the hotel. After pre-dinner drinks we all headed out to a restaurant for dinner and then back to the hotel. After breakfast the next morning we were picked up and transferred to alongside the Spirit of Freedom. While we were given welcoming drinks and a briefing, the crew tranferred our gear to the dive deck and cabins. Leo and I had a cabin to ourselves with an upper bunk bed and a larger lower bed plus on suite shower and toilet. Once we'd checked our stuff was aboard we headed to the dining area and checked in with Mossy so that he could confirm our diving certifications and experience. Then we went to the dive deck and started to put together our diving gear. I was using the OMS dual cylinder travel band system again so as to have two independent dive cylinders. Most of the divers in our group had DIN regs and were going bto be diving on Nitrox. It took a while to juggle the assigned Nitrox cylinders around so that we didn't have to use DIN to Yoke adapters. We then had lunch as we steamed out to the Great Barrier Reef. Jorgies Patch, at Hastings Reef, is a delightful dive site used as a checkout first and second dive for the trip. We soon settled in to enjoy the delights of warm water, tropical reef diving with 15 metre plus visibility. After the dive we ate and then prepared to dive again. |
