| Divemaster: John Lawler, VSAG Boat: "Miles Ahead", John Lawler's 6.5m 175HP, Queenscliff First dive of the VSAG Queens Birthday trip to Queenscliff. We'd headed down to Rye, then onto Sorrento and across on the ferry to Queenscliff late Friday afternoon. Off loaded our gear at Boarfish Lodge and went to dinner with the other VSAG members that had already arrived. Then back to the lodge for a good night's sleep. The weather was looking ominous as we transferred our diving gear into the two boats and headed to the Queenscliff boat ramp, stopping at the bakery in town to buy some lunch. Heading out down the channel towards the bay the whitecaps on the water looked rather unpleasant. Undaunted, we headed out to the Coogee and made ready to dive. I'd dived the Coogee during my Advanced Open Water course, but the conditions were so bad on that dive that I never actually saw the wreck. This time the visibility was at least 15 metres. Alan Storen and I geared up and went in. As we headed down the shot line the wreck came into view. The end of the shot line was just on the port side of the stern. We explored the stern for a bit and then headed towards the two large boilers. Plenty of fish everywhere, and lots of colourful marine growth. We proceeded over the boilers and onto the bow. Again, plenty of fish here. I signalled to turn around and as we started back I noticed Alan's ocy was leaking. He had a go at fixing it but it didn't seem to quit leaking. Once back at the stern we started up the shot line. When we were back aboard, Bridey, Greg and John headed down the shot line. Conditions has eased somewhat. Indeed it was getter better as the day progressed. Once everyone had completed the dive the two boats headed back through the rip and into the shelter of Point Nepean where we had lunch. On Freediver, hot dogs and hot soup were supplied for lunch. Thus began a cuisine rivalry for the weekend. Over lunch we decided on Awesome Reef for our second dive. |
