USS Arkansas (BB-33) was a Wyoming-class dreadnought battleship, built by the United States Navy and launched in 1911. Her armour plating was between 28-30 cm (11-12 inches) thick, depending upon the area of the ship.

Arkansas served in both World Wars I and World War II. Arkansas was expended as a target in Operation Crossroads, a pair of nuclear weapon tests at Bikini Atoll in July 1946. Arkansas survived the "Test Able" atomic bomb air blast on 1 July 1946 with extensive shock damage to her upper works, while her hull and armoured turrets were only lightly damaged.

On 25 July 1946, the Arkansas battleship was sunk by the underwater nuclear "Test Baker" at Bikini Atoll, along with nine other ships. Unattenuated by air, the shock wave was transmitted directly to underwater hulls. Arkansas, only 205 metres (225 yards) from the epicentre, appeared to have been crushed as if by a tremendous hammer blow from below. The wave of water from the blast capsized the ship, which was then hammered down into the shallow bottom by the descent of the water column thrown up by the blast.

For our Tuesday morning dive, we descended to the stern of the Arkansas battleship, then I moved along the bottom of the hull towards the bow, and the back to the stern.

The most interesting characteristic when diving the USS Arkansas is seeing the ripples in the 30 cm (12 inch) thick hull caused by the force of the underwater nuclear blast. You can clearly see how the hull armour was made "concave" between the hull beams. There is a huge gash where the atomic blast pierced three layers of 30 cm (12 inch) armour.

She lies mostly upside down, with her port side largely intact and the starboard side pressed into the floor of the Bikini Lagoon. The main hull is at a depth of approximately 55 metres (180 feet).

On some of the dives at Bikini Atoll, the deco bar is suspended from a tender. After finishing deco, we pass our EAN50 and EAN95 cylinders up to the crew in the tender. Then MV Windward rolls in to do live pickups.
