I got it only after I'd been playing a computer game that is solved by moving pieces vertically or horizontally. That's when I heard rose differently.

Saw this written up in Jon Carroll's column in the SF Chronicle. Boy, did it bring back memories! I learned this circa 1962, but it had a much better story with it then. None of the computer geek stuff; much more mysterious.

Took me about 2 days to figure it out. I did it hard way. My genius friends can't get it, yet the bartender in our favorit bar...she figured it out in 2 minutes.
