Got a call on Saterday afternoon to ask if I could help an overseas visitor here on business get out diving. Jason hadn't dived for a while, but was experienced in a wide range of conditions.

I checked the weather forecast and quickly realised things weren't suitable for getting out in my boat, so it would have to be done using a charter operator. On looking up the Dive Victoria local itinerary, a dive at The Grotto seemed the best option available.

Jason arrived by taxi at my place at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning and we headed down to Portsea. It was an overcast day, with the sun promising to peak out but it never really happened. We unloaded the car of dive gear and checked in. Jason hired a BC, weight belt, fins, mask, etc. He borrowed a cylinder and regs from me.

Once we were kitted up we transferred the dive gear onto the boat. Jason Salter was our boat captain, which gave me a chance to catch up with him. With everyone aboard we headed over to Queenscliff to pick up more divers. With a full boat load of divers, Jason Salter gave a safety briefing and we headed out to the dive site. The Heads were fairly stormy, with some big swell both inside and outside the heads on the horizon.

While waiting for slack water it was decided that some divers would do Easter Bommie, and the rest The Grotto. Once slack water arrived divers were dropped in at Easter Bommie and then The Grotto.

Once we were in the water Jason thought he needed more weight but I convinced him that he was okay and we started to descend. Unfortunately with the stuffing about on the surface we missed the shot line. We arrived at the bottom in a sea of kelp and started to make our way towards the dive site.

Eventually we made it the the actual dive site and found some other divers there. Heaps of colour and fish life. I spend some time with a very inquisitive Blue Devil fish.

When Jason was down to 100 bar we headed to the west, away from the dive site into shallower water. Then I shot my DSMB and we ascended. After completing our safety stop we made it to the surface where we waited for a while while the boat picked up other dive groups.

Once everyone was back on the boat it went back to Portsea and we made our way back to Dive Victoria's change area. We loaded the dive gear into the car and headed to The Scuba Doctor for air fills.
I drove Jason to his hotel in Sandringham and then headed on home. A great day out with a new dive buddy.
