A number of the others hadn't done any night diving and thought it strange that Mick and I were so looking forward to it. We explained to them how we regularly did night dives at the various Melbourne piers. That we typically saw more fish at night and the better colours that the torches bought out. So I few more decided to join in the dive.
We headed off in the opposite direction to the main group, meeting them head on about two thirds of the way through the dive. They came towards us with torches going in all directions. I was like a scene from those WWII moves with searchlights picking out enemy aircraft.
While it was a very enjoyable dive, Mick and I were both a bit dissappointed that we actually saw less fish and colour at night. It seems reef diving is the opposite to pier diving with respect to the quantity of fish seen. Mind you it's all relative. We still saw much more than we would typically see on a pier dive.
