| Boat Name: Sea Dragon, Dive Victoria, Portsea A dive for Cheryl Lees to do her first Open Water boat dive and complete her PADI Open Water course. Julie Bendall was Cheryl's instructor and Shane Whiteside and myself were tagging along for moral support and fun. We stopped by The Scuba Doctor on the way down to Portsea to grab Cheryl's kit and get air fills. After the problems Cheryl had with the hire fins the previous day, we purchased a pair of Mares fins and dive boots, plus Northern Diver dive gloves, for her. At Portsea we checked in with Dive Victoria, unloaded gear, changed and waited on the pier for the dive boat to arrive. Sea Dragon was packed to capacity as we headed out to the dive site. The conditions were rather ordinary with quite lumpy seas over on Lonsdale Wall. With the briefing completed and slack water upon us, divers started to enter the water. Our group of four held back so as we could be the last ones in. Julie and Cheryl positioned themselves beside the starboard side door and Shane and myself headed to the stern starboard side landing. We all entered the water and gathered at the buoy marking the top of the shot line. Shane and I headed down the shot line with Julie and Cheryl eventually following. The visibility was very ordinary, so much so that I kept thinking the bottom was coming up when it wasn't! Shane and I made it to the end of the shot and waited just off of the bottom. I then looked up to see Cheryl and Julie coming into view. But Cheryl then disappeared below the horizon. I moved towards her only to find the edge of the wall and Cheryl standing on a ledge at 18 metres with Julie beside her. They joined us at the top of the wall whereupon we started to move about looking as best we could at the marine life. There were plenty of ledges and undercuts to explore. Eventually is was time to ascend. Julie and Shane deployed their DSMBs. I looked around and found Shane had disappeared in the current. So Julie, Cheryl and I proceeded to ascent together and do a safety stop. We all made it back safely onboard Sea Dragon. One diver from another group was recovering on Oxygen. I heard later she had been dragged to the surface by her DSMB and was taking O2 as a precaution. Once back at Portsea Pier we disembarked, changed out of our diving gear and headed off to the Rye Hotel for lunch and then back to The Scuba Doctor for air fills. Cheryl was using a jacket style BC that had been loaned to her. However she was uncomfortable in it and felt that the OMS IQ Pack and wing setup she'd used for most of her Open Water course was way more comfortable. So we asked Peter Fear to put one together for Cheryl such that she'd be able to do a checkout dive with it the following weekend. |
