Finally figured out after maybe an hour or so, but separated maybe on four or five days.
I was thinking about the problem as an equation at first, then as a logical problem, then as a play of words, and finally as a solution hidden "between" the dice, like a kind of increment calculation.
Dropped it all down because of the enormous time i spent on each roll to calculate the result.
heh. it's not difficult, it's different. not used to math problems like these ;)

Took me around 30 min and writing down 25 rolls. But how could it take anyone a year?!

Finally solved this pain. I was thinking way too technically, but as soon as I turned that off, it was solved instantly.

No luck in the first five tries. Then, I read a comment: "the smarter you were, the longer it took to figure it out." After reading that, I turned off the Mensa part of my brain, and got it right away.

Got it on my sixth try, but think I could have gotten it sooner if the die had all been the same color.

I was looking for an exhaustive list of all 6**5 permutations and results, stumbled onto this site and the Bill G. story, and sorted out the puzzle based upon the examples therein.
Cute.
