Petals Around the Rose: Fraternity Register

After being shown this on a message board, i gave it a few tries then just looked at the source code for the web page. I had some idea, but as this is taking my focus away from my work, i figured i should just find out the answer somehow. Its as i thought, but a bit simpler

That was fun.

Took me about 30 min to figure out the first half and 30 for the last.

I'm proud to say it took me just that little bit longer, so I guess you can call me brainy - or perhaps just an abstract thinker, that's more likely. Although the 15 minutes it took me were also filled with browsing the Bill Gates story, stupidly expecting to find the solution there, and considering whether to do a Googlesearch for said solution. But pride prevailed! If a load of scientist friends can do it, so can I!

Mann... that was stupidly easyy... dang... what makes me took so longg ?!?!?!? I feel fooled... but that was fun.. hehehe.. Do u guys know where can I get this kind of game?? I wanna solve moreee !!! *Actually I got the clue from internet *

One throw. My very first guess at the rule proved to be correct.

Two throws. Sent this to several friends with a request to tell me how long it took to figure it out, and it appears that those who daily deal with "big picture" issues get it quickly, those who work with abstract theory or detail take longer. Nothing to do with innate intelligence. For example, these folks got it within 10 min: commercial banker, classical musician, charity case manager, wine buyer, retired businesswoman. These took significantly longer, or in a couple of cases are still stumped: med school professor, CPA, mechanical engineer. The exception is a nuclear sub specialist, who got it immediately. Anyhow, my hypothesis is that a tendency to "drill down" with data analysis and algorithms doesn't help in this situation, while a more expansive problem-solving approach works.
