| The Shinkoku Maru is one of the two mandatory dives in Chuuk. She was one of the eight fleet tankers which refuelled the Japanese Strike Force for Pearl Harbour. The Shinkoku Maru was built in 1939 by the Kawasaki Dockyard for the Kobe Sanbashi K.K. Line as a modern tanker. Her construction was subsidized by the fuel starved Japanese Navy and her first voyages were carrying oil from the United States to Japan, prior to the embargo. Tonnage: 10,020. Length: 152.4 metres. Beam: 19.8 metres. Max Speed: 19.8 kmots. Launched: 13 December 1939. She now features magnificent coral growth and fish life after being hit by a torpedo and sinking to rest on an even keel. Location GPS coordinates from Thorfinn.net. Accuracy unknown. See also: https://www.michaelmcfadyenscuba.info/viewpage.php?page_id=242 |
