Can be frustrating but once you discover the solution, is incredibly beautiful. Has nothing to do with supposed intelligence but I sure get a giggle out of reading the various entries.

Took me a minute, the restriction of numbers (not any uneven one) gave me the hint.
I am a top french mathematical student (<30), but I dont think there is much link with it. However it is funny to hear about people spending days on it.

It's not all that difficult, but enjoyingly frustrating until you get it.

So obvious once you figure it out, yet so hard to figure out.

English not being my first languate, I had to lookup the meaning of 'petals around the rose'.
After that, it was 'just' giving my mind the opportunity to go to a state of absolute simpleness. That transition took me a while, and it felt good when getting into that state!
I think I'll transform the puzzle into a web-service, so we can have our training attendees write a nice UI without revealing the secret.

Statistical behaviour of the series appeared very atypical, simpler and more redundant than I expected, so I figured it can't be about that but something else, presumably quite simple... and so it was.
Takes just a few tries once the mind is open to alternatives.

I want a smiley that's jumping up and down and clapping. This has taken me either three or four days... I've lost my mind and my sense of time and space. I can live without them now that I have got this figured.
