Got it after seeing 3 rolls. Just like a lot of puzzles, you either have the intuition up front or you struggle for some indeterminant amount of time unti you do.

Took 25 rolls for me, about half of them watching (without guessing) whether color and orientation of the dice mattered. Of course I'm not saying whether they do.

I looked at it briefly and ruled a few plausible things out, then went to read the account of Bill Gates' attempt; I changed my approach after I read that the Marketing Coordinator solved it - reading an account of other people playing it was at least as instructive as trying it myself.
