I finally got it. 3 days of thinking about it and about an hour of attempts each day.

Took me about 20 minutes. I usually stink at these kings of puzzles but it finally came to me. Very neat puzzle.

created Petals.class to verify...

Fun "game." It took me longer to read the article than it did to solve the puzzle, I'm happy to say. I'm particularly happy to know that I got it significantly faster than Bill Gates did.

Maybe it's because I'm a Mac user?

Perhaps this game was designed to be difficult only for the male gender.

Well if you don't understand the name you haven't solved the riddle. Just looking up the source code and finding the algorithm doesn't count.

Because there are a limited number of
values for the score and 5^6 possible
inputs, there are a lot of apparent patterns
of correlation that look great for a while
but then turn out to be wrong. (I think
the "Gates" story echos this.) I did *not*
solve the puzzle quickly -- after looking
at it unsuccessfully a few times I finally
had a quiet, distraction-free session and
got it. Congrat's to all the "potentates."

Not bad at all...took me about 5 min or so.
