I solved Petals around the rose using pattern recognition. It has nothing to do with intelligence or mathematical techniques.

Man do I feel stupid, my friend played this with me at a party for half an hour and (well, I was a bit drunk) but I had NO clue what was happening! Took me about 10 minutes online. Eeesh.
