I acutally had to do this for a psychology class and I never figured it out - so people had to tell me it just didnt make sense, but I finally get it - Just picturing a rose helps! sorry to those like me, who don't understand it!

As snoutwood, i also approached this the mathematical route first, but after repeatedly failing in finding a pattern, i stoped and gave it a minute of thinking.... EUREKA!!! i solved it in about 10 seconds. Great puzzle
