Tell you what, after many guesses I decided to use spreadsheet-- that is, EXCEL in my case--

I collected 60 cases and sorted them by result. Then I discovered something odd...

It's true that the more you think you're smart the harder the game is. It's BADLY simple, but don't forget that there are very many SIMPLE ways to make the answers always even.

So concentrate on finding various SIMPLE algorithms, it's very very simple I tell you.

Took so bloody long, it was the always has to be even that gave it away.

hehee... took me a one hour plus to figure it out

A friend of mine sent me this puzzle months ago, and I labored over it for a couple of days (being a math geek, I tend to make things much more complicated than they need to be), got frustrated, then forgot about it until today. I found the bookmark while cleaning my computer and decided to give it one more shot. I finally got it!
