It took me about an hour to get it. I was reading the Bill Gates story for the second time and I had an inspiration.
It's a great puzzle and I'm looking forward to trying it on all my friends.

My friend figured it out at the USAICO, and came back and showed it to me. I finally figured it out when I thought a certain *CAN'T SAY*. Great puzzle. No one can figure it out.

Learned The Rose Petal Game at a North American Simulation and Gaming Association (NASAGA) convention at U of Michigan decades ago.
Also learned Petal's Revenge, the follow-up game to The Rose Petal Game, and am an Instructor in both at parties and gatherings.
Also developed a few games of the same ilk, inlcuding The "Easy" Game

I can't believe how difficult I made it for myself to do this!
I can't wait to show it to my husband who's a games programmer - it will be nice to know something that he doesn't (for a change)!
