Found this on chat.deviantart.com/chat/dAmnpuzzles and then came here to test out my theory (you get limited guesses in the puzzle there). I feel really, really stupid, having spent about 100 minutes on this puzzle, only to discover I was looking at it completely the wrong way. Stupid me.

This took me five months but I finally figured it out. #@*%! Then when I did get it I was like eek! and I felt so dumb.
