Loved the story about Bill Gates and Petals. I can just imagine the group hunched over the dice, trying to figure it out.
My introduction was through a Public Domain program back on the Commodore 64. Can't say if I got it back then in my youth, but I had figured it out by the time a college professor introduced it to our class one year.
