Look for the "Petals". That's the key for me to get the answer.

I am not sure what kind of school you went to then. Generally in mathematics, the method is at least as important as the result.

In this case, the "answer" appears to give you the correct result every time but if the original inventor of the game included a condition that every millionth roll had the result "fish" then does your answer still work? Your answer would work for 999,999 rolls then suddenly it would be wrong. You would have no way of knowing that it was wrong until the millionth roll.

This is a problem that all physics theories have to face. They can never fully determine the behaviour of the universe, they can only offer an approximation that is correct almost all of the time.

What a load of crap! This isnt a theory, its simple mathematics that a 5-year old can do!

I actually guessed it correctly, but counted incorrectly so I went on to other solutions, finally someone told me that it was actually the answer I had guessed but counted up wrong.

There are one or two formulas on this site that seem to work, though I am not versed in math well enough to know if they are correct. I have to agree with Keith that this is children's sight recognition and simple math, but I am not ready to disregard hay.mail's contention, not knowing how he arrived at his conclusion.

How's that for not taking sides Question Laughing

Cheers!! Cool MD

I have no idea wat u lot are philosophising about but there is only one method to this paticular puzzle.
If this puzzle was not called 'Petals Around the Rose' then there will b 2 methods to reaching the answer, but da name of the game suggests which method you are supposed 2 use.

Correct, but as said before, other answers that are correct mathwise are fun, and good mind exercise! Cool

True, but that would be going off topic.

I went around solving this puzzle an interesting way. First of all, I decided that since it had to be an even number, I decided to add up either the odd numbers or the even numbers. I started with the odd. The first 15 or so games after I figured this tidbit out, I came up about half of the time two off of the true number. Then I decided to subtract two from the sum of the odds, and I got the true number about half to one-quarter of the time.

Once I got a couple of rolls with only 3's and 5's, I found out that you had to subtract 2 from only the sum of those specific numbers. Along the way I came up with very complex algorithims to get the true number; but it turned out very simple.

It's a great mind challenge for the young and old.

Edit: I still don't understand what "petals around the rose" means for this game, though I will probably figure out soon enough.
