In this case, the "answer" appears to give you the correct result every time but if the original inventor of the game included a condition that every millionth roll had the result "fish" then does your answer still work? Your answer would work for 999,999 rolls then suddenly it would be wrong. You would have no way of knowing that it was wrong until the millionth roll.
This is a problem that all physics theories have to face. They can never fully determine the behaviour of the universe, they can only offer an approximation that is correct almost all of the time. |
I see the philosophical point you are making. Consider then
how the game propagates: No one ever tells anyone else
the answer, they only present a finite number of dice patterns
and scores. When the observer predicts 6 or more scores
in a row, they are to conclude that they are "a potentate"
and in turn present the puzzle to another observer. So, if
the answer was "fish" for 1 of 10^6 patterns as presented
by the puzzle originator, then that part of the puzzle would
almost certainly be lost as the puzzle propagated. The rules
would be "cleansed" of any exceptions to the simple rules.
On the other hand, someone could change the rules when
it becomes their turn to present it (the 1 die could contribute
a score of -2 or something). So there isn't a universal
truth to discover, instead two people play the game until
the observer either gives up or decides that she has the
solution. No absolute confirmation ever takes place.

I understand what you're trying to put across, but if you are in doubt of your method used and still don't get it (the puzzle) even though your answers are right, you probably got it wrong.
Trust us, once you have gotten it truly right, you will know it is right. |
