My incorrect algorithm gave me correct answers enough times to be invited to join the Fraternity, but it was only after discussing it with a friend that had found the "real" answer, that I realized my mistake.

Here is my answer and why it works most of the time:

My solution was to subtract the # of odd rolls from the sum of the odd rolls. So for this roll:
6 6 5 5 5 the answer would be 15 - 3 and would come out to 12, the correct answer

5 5 6 6 6 the answer would be 10 - 2 and would come out to 10, the correct answer

2 3 4 4 1 the answer would be 4 - 2 and would come out to 2, the correct answer

And so it went through about 15 correct guesses. The website seemed to think I had the correct solution.

If you have the real answer, you'll know what I was doing wrong. I'm just delighted to have found an incorrect answer that works well enough to almost be correct, haha, while still being very wrong and incorrect.

Anyway, this was an extremely interesting logic puzzle, and I enjoyed it immensely.

Very Happy Funny and uncanny, it makes sense though. It's crazy how things workout... I wonder how many others had the same idea... Confused

I agree - that solution is awesome Very Happy If you think about it, it does make a bit of sense too.

Very interesting. Haven't tried it myself yet but I will for now take your word for it. I really do wonder how many people thing that is the answer.

There a roll where your algorithm DOESN'T work?

This algorithm works itself out to be a mathematical way of expressing the CORRECT solution, so will work every time. Just another way to get there.

you need to change your example

you show that 10-2=10

unless they have changed the rules of mathematics, 10-2=8 Razz

Hehe my method, wrong/right was an algebra problem. I assigned each die a letter A-F 1 being A, 2 B and so on. Then I would roll. I'd get like a 15365 now I would say A+C+2E+F = and then get the answer from the program, in this case 10, after doing this a billion times to no avail without solving any variables, I had an extremely lucky break and got 5 5s, Yahtzee! lol, so 5E=20. Then I caught on to the value of each die. It's only after this that I had found why the title is so significant. Then I hit myself. My calculus professor is getting a taste of this one tomorrow.

Fun when a plan comes together!

The old axiom "first things first" did it for me, the rose.

I'm on these boards daily, so let's yak! Very Happy

Cheers, MoonDog Cool

'mc24757', I'm gonna have to disagree wit your method and the method first posted because this puzzle is not a highly complicated equation at all.
In my opinion, the brainteaser is trying to select teh right method from the different methods u find.
This method is wrong becasue it has nothing to do with 'Petals Around the Rose'. One of the clues refer to the title of the game, so u must use it 2 prove that you have indeed worked out the answer.
The method used at the beginning is, therefore, also wrong. That was how my brother worked it out after I gave him a couple of hints and he agreed that my method must be right since it uses the title.

Yes Mountain, I agree that the 'Petals' site answer is the correct one according to the designer of the puzzle, but how does one err by working out others? Cool

Out others? (my last couple of words) The word 'err' may not be commonly used, is that part of the questioned 'last couple of words'? 'Err' is to make mistake. It is used in poetry also. Old english for today's word 'error'.
