I was able to solve the puzzle mathematically, but the name clue still makes no sense to me. Can anyone explain why the name of the game is important without giving away the algorthm?

It's one way of explaining the algorithm to solve the puzzle. It's not complicated mathematicly, but with the name of the game, it's even easier.
I don't really know why it took me SO long to understand why the name was significant, even after I had understood how to get the right answer.

We all process information and learn in slightly different ways, the different ways different people approach things always amazes me. (I work in education, so my interest in this sort of thing is useful!)

For me, now, it was considering the name that led me to crack the puzzle...

I solved it without the name, and then when I looked at my solution, I realized how relevant the name was and how much easier solving the problem in that manner would have been.

The name of the game is very significant.
In fact I figured it out just through the name.
