You should not belittle yourself quite so much. Not every scientific achievement is the result of pure genius. There is a lot to be said for perserverance.

I eventually managed to do the magic eye. I can assure you that there is a message there!

The emphasis is on the EARLY reading skills (think about how you used to read as a child).
